Music Monday: Matthew Dear

You could throw around generous descriptors and any number of genre-locking terms; electronic pop, minimal house, acid techno. But you’d still fail to get to the center of Matthew Dear. With releases under no fewer than three aliases, including False (M_NUS), Jabberjaw (Perlon), and Audion (Spectral Sound), the Texas native has earned his international status over the course of a decade, getting his bearings on the DJ decks as a teenager to flooring sold-out crowds at venues like Fabric, and releasing universally praised original productions. It’s clear that Dear has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. [text via]
Matthew Dear’s most recent excursions have found him at the doorsteps of the minimal-but-funky regime of techno music. Inspired by pioneers like, Mike Inc., Thomas Brinkmann, and Ricardo Villalobos, Dear has ingested, manipulated and re-introduced his version of this always changing and innovative realm of sound creation. Recent acceptance into the legendary Plus 8 roster and ever-popular Berlin based, Perlon label has solidified Dear as a viable source for pushing the boundaries of modern dance music while at the same time remaining focused on the simple goal of making people dance. Techno’s earthy cousin microhouse is generally as unassuming as its name, but Michigan-based producer Matthew Dear infuses the snapping, beeping compositions of his second album with a sincere yearn, broadening the genre in the process. Dear’s breathy, throaty voice has a stirring tunefulness that recalls TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe. Paired with downcast piano, guitar, and darkly funky rhythms, his enigmatic mantras and coded narratives (the album title nods to a Kurt Vonnegut character) deal in romantic desperation; but there’s strange hope when he finally exclaims, “I’ve got to figure out love!” [text via]
Matthew Dear is for sure one of my favorites! I the summer the his music is perfect, it feels as if the songs were written for that exact day! While in the winter months, when you have been hiding indoors from the nasty cold weather – the music gives you a hope and brightens the day! Matthew Dear works under the names: Audion, False, & Jabberjaw. Make sure to check out his other work too! I am so glad that Ole showed Matthew Dear to me, his music is so great to turn on at anytime and make a smile come upon our faces. :)
