Music Monday: The Swell Season

The Swell Season is an amazing duo formed by Irish musician Glen Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová. They made there debut in the 2007 movie Oncewhich happens to be one of my all time favorites. In October they released a new album named “Strict Joy” and I just got it this week! It is absolutely amazing. I noticed that it was a bit of a sadder tune – like maybe some thing was not the same between the two lovers. So after some research I found that Glen and Markéta were not longer romantically involved – but still are good friends and making music.

If you watch/listen to “Falling Slowly” then follow it up with “Low Rising” you can see the change.

Glen said about the new album: “For me, it’s just an audio diary. It’s just another installment of the life we lead.” Spin Magazine’s review of Strict Joy gave the album 4 out of 5 stars. “If Glen Hansard’s and Markéta Irglová’s roles in the hit Irish indie film Once unintentionally wove the tale of their real-life falling in love, their second album as the Swell Season weaves the story of their falling out of it.”

During the song “The Rain” Glen sings “Okay we’re not what i promised you we would become But maybe its a question of how much you really want… Okay, I’m not what I promised you I would become I know, we’re not what I promised you we’d be by now.” The lyrics are still strong and from the heart! The new album has 2 CD’s – one of which is live! When “Falling Slowly” is being played live there is a part where they have the audience sing by themselves.. it sounds like a beautiful choir, paired with a great combo of lyrics – it gave me the chills. The new album, Strict Joy is a must have! I love it so much!

I love that Glen is still using his ratty guitar, with holes. I have read many interviews saying that they are the most humble people ever met! I do hope to meet them someday. Markéta became the first Czech woman to win an Oscar (for “Falling Slowly” from the movie Once), and at 19-years-old at the time of the win, she is the youngest person to win an Oscar in a musical category. I am so impressed with Markéta, she made such an amazing movie at 17, and has such a great spirit – not to mention her multi-instrument musical talent!

Make sure to get this album! It is one of the best of the year in my opinion! Buy it here. And if you have not seen “Once” make sure to watch it, you will not be let down – it is a great movie to add to the Christmas vacation list!
